NWO, the Dutch Research Council, has awarded funding to six projects under its call Breaking down barriers to an inclusive living environment. Among them is BridgeXR, a project that uses eXtended Reality (XR) to make journeys more accessible and inclusive.

The purpose of the NWO call is to promote an inclusive society in which people with disabilities or chronic conditions can participate fully and actively. The emphasis lies on creating an inclusive living environment in areas such as education, work, housing, leisure, and mobility.

The BridgeXR project focuses on improving accessibility in transport and public spaces for people with disabilities. Despite progress, obstacles such as poor infrastructure and complex wayfinding still limit equal participation. By combining eXtended Reality (XR), Universal Design principles, and tailored training, BridgeXR aims to remove these barriers. The project runs from 2026 to 2030.
