The Dutch-language trade publication Mobiliteit.nl interviewed lead researcher Yan Feng about BridgeXR. The interview resulted in a great introduction to the project for Dutch mobility professionals.
The article, published at the end of July 2026, highlights the importance of the BridgeXR research. ‘In the Netherlands, more than 32 percent of the population lives with some form of disability,’ the article explains. ‘Yet public transport and the surrounding public space are still insufficiently accessible for many of them. This leads to social exclusion and a lower quality of life.’
The role of XR
Feng then discusses the more technical aspects of the research. What role, for example, can XR play? ‘It is an efficient way to test solutions before they are actually implemented,’ she explains. ‘We can virtually test new forms of wayfinding while participants with disabilities navigate a realistically simulated station.’
According to Feng, XR can also be an effective training tool to help people with disabilities regain the confidence to use public transport.
Communication
For research projects such as BridgeXR, it is important that a wider audience – in this case, mobility professionals – is aware of the project. This will increase the chances that, once the first results and innovations become available, they will find their way into practice.
